They were introduced as one of this 2012 edition’s most spectacular bands and the Carling Family did not let the Ascona audience down! Quite the opposite, in fact, as the Swedish band won the 2012 My Choice-Audience Award, the festival’s audience award, which is awarded for the third time. Led by the exceptional Gunhild Carling, the band came in first in front of audience favorites such as French soul and bues woman Nina Attal, the great singer-pianist Davina Sowers and her Vagabonds, blues vocalist Christina Jaccard (winner of the 2012 Swiss Jazz Award ) and the winners of last year’s Audience Award, Sugarpie & the Candymen, who are set for an international career.
The Carling Family is a unique band among its kind in Europe. Made up, almost entirely, of the member of one whole family, the band was formed in 1983 and initially focused on New Orleans jazz. As the years went by, the band broadened its repertoire, including styles such as dixieland, swing, bebop, even folk and classical music. The ease with which its musicians exchange instruments and the band’s spectacular tap dance and acrobatic performances are particularly astounding and contribute to making them an extremely entertaining and appreciated band.
As winners of the Audience Award, which was sponsored this year by the Progetto parco nazionale del Locarnese (Project for a National Park in the Locarno Region), the Carling Family will be performing at JazzAscona 2013. se länk
